Coach’s Update: 2024 July

Dylan Green and Charlotte Forman won their respective singles events at the 2024 Independence Day Regatta.
The Penn AC High Performance Group has been busy this summer.
Highlighting our success, Evan Olson will race for the medals in the seven seat of the M8+ at the Paris Olympic Games. This will be Evan’s first Olympics and second senior national team, all with Penn AC.
At the Henley Royal Regatta, the USA M4x with Penn AC’s Dom Williams (Univ. of Pennsylvania) and Kevin Cardno (Univ. of Alabama, Huntsville) that narrowly missed Olympic qualification by 0.13 seconds, competed in the Queen Mother Challenge Cup. The crew raced valiantly in their semifinal but fell to eventual winner, Leander Club, by half a length. Truthfully, the M4x never recovered emotionally from the disappointment of the Final Olympic Qualification Regatta and consequently did not perform their best. Our hope is that after a well-deserved break some of the athletes will carry on to LA 2028.
As part of US Rowing’s Henley Project, we also supported the M2x of Cedar Cunningham (Washington State Univ.) and Casey Fuller (Fairfield Univ. & Saugatuck). They developed rapidly training on the Schuylkill and raced exceptionally well at Henley. They won both their heat and quarterfinal “easily,” and then won a terrific semifinal, in the incessant rain, over the Dutch. Their race begins at 17:00 of this video:
Breck Duncan (Univ. of Wisconsin) raced in the bow seat of the USA M8+ at Henley in the Grand Challenge Cup. This was his first international race and first race as a USA athlete. Isa Darvin (Univ. of Wisconsin) raced in the W8+ and made Sunday’s final.
Elsewhere in Europe, Riona McCormick (Boston Univ.) showed excellent form racing to victory in the lightweight women’s single sculls at the Bled International Regatta, in Slovenia. Energized from the win, she continued racing in top form and took the LW1x win at the Henley Women’s Regatta.
Solveig Imsdahl (Cornell Univ.) and Elaine Tierney (Temple Univ.) took a silver medal in Bled rowing in the women’s open pair event. The two, who previously medaled for the USA in the LW2- at the World Rowing Championships Regatta, raced well at the Henley Women’s Regatta, ultimately losing in the semifinal to the eventual winners from Leander Club.
Closer to home, Jimmy McCullough (Univ. of Delaware) won senior team trials in the LM4x and will race at the world championships, in August. This boat is also training on the Schuylkill. Dylan Green (Univ. of Wisconsin) earned selection for the USA U23 M4x, and will also race at the world championships, in August. Charlotte Forman (Temple Univ.) and Dylan won the open singles at the IDR Regatta.
Olympic updates and results from the Canadian Henley Regatta and World Rowing Championships will follow.
